KSAT Supports Norway’s First Astronaut on Historic Polar Orbit Mission

Jannicke Mikkelsen has made history as Norway’s first astronaut, successfully launched aboard the groundbreaking FRAM2 mission. KSAT proudly supports the mission from its polar ground stations at Svalbard and Troll, ensuring the Dragon capsule remains connected to Earth throughout its journey.

On April 1, Jannicke Mikkelsen was launched into space on the FRAM2 mission, becoming Norway’s first-ever astronaut. KSAT plays a vital role in the mission’s success by providing communications support from our ground stations at both poles—Svalbard in the Arctic and Troll in Antarctica.

FRAM2 is the first human spaceflight to enter a true polar orbit, flying directly over Earth’s North and South Poles. Over the course of the 3- to 5-day mission, the Dragon capsule circles the Earth roughly every 100 minutes, enabling continuous scientific research and Earth observation.

KSAT Svalbard Ground Station

Norway has a proud tradition of polar exploration, and in that spirit, KSAT has established some of the most remote and resilient ground stations on the planet. Supporting this historic mission from both ends of the Earth underscores our commitment to connecting even the most extreme environments with space.

We are honored to have supported Commander Mikkelsen and the FRAM2 team on this remarkable journey into the unknown.
