Best performing subcontractor 2000

Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems has achieved another milestone in Korea. Hyundai Kongsberg Maritime Company Ltd, the Korean joint venture unit, has been appointed "Best Performing Subcontractor 2000" by the world's largest shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries. The award was lately handed over by the ship-yard's top management to HKM's President J. S. Lee.

The shipbuilder delivered 63 vessels during 2000, and KMSS propulsion control and machinery automation systems were successfully installed in more than 40 ships of various sizes and complexity.

To accommodate Hyundai Heavy Industries' volume production of merchant ships, local infrastructure is a prerequisite to success. Therefore HKM has its own site office with ten full time engineers, offering around the clock services, inside the shipyard. KMSS systems are delivered from Norway. However, project specific tasks like documentation and commissioning are carried out locally, giving KMSS the advantage of being classified a domestic supplier.

Since formally starting the cooperation with Hyundai Heavy Industry in 1991, Ship Automation has all the time been challenged on quality assurance and product performance. With this shipbuilder's streamlined production and strong emphasize on productivity, "trouble-causing" subcontractors have no future. KMSS has proved the opposite by completing more than 1000 systems to Hyundai.
