Our industry partners’ goal is to create safe, attractive career opportunities in the composites and plastics industry. The industrial communities in Kongsberg and Raufoss will have extensive recruitment needs in the years to come. The education offered will be attractive to a number of manufacturing companies. The companies will utilise these skills to develop existing products and to create a new industrial base.

Tomorrow’s education in Norway

UPPER SECONDARY SCHOOL

Kongsberg Upper Secondary School is working on setting up a VG2 class in composites and plastics. It will provide students with the opportunity to achieve a craft certificate in four different fields of specialisation: Composite Polymers, Plastics Mechanic, Thermoplastics and Manufacturing Techniques. Kongsberg Technology Training Centre (K-Tech) and Raufoss Industrial. Training Office will together with the companies offering apprenticeships be responsible for developing skilled workers for future-oriented industrial jobs.

TECHNICAL COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE

With support from Innovation Norway a two-year educational program in composites and plastic materials is in development at the technical colleges at Kongsberg and Gjøvik. A continuing educational program will also be developed at the respective university colleges. Thus skilled workers will have a relevant continuing education opportunity, and newly graduated engineers will be able to top up their knowledge of composites and plastic materials. This opens the way towards a master’s degree and possibly a PhD at NTNU or at relevant universities abroad.

MODERN LABORATORY

In autumn 2015 the Krona Knowledge Park in Kongsberg will be completed. Industry and Buskerud County Authority have collaborated to ensure the college will have a composites laboratory from day one. This will be the single most important success criterion for learning about composites and plastic materials. The laboratory will be used by pupils and students from upper secondary school via technical college, and through to university level. Similarly, a supplementary teaching laboratory will be established at Gjøvik. The companies linked to NCE Systems Engineering and NCE Raufoss will participate by demonstrating modern production equipment and offering inspiring tudent exercises in the real manufacturing environment. The collaboration is consistent with the state of the art research on lifelong learning, which stresses the importance of close cooperation between the industries and the educational sector. The collaboration across expertise clusters contributes to industry communities increasing their global competitiveness.

Decision for the future

Norway has bought the new Joint Strike Fighter aircraft. This procurement has led to the authorities’ goal of building up forward-looking expertise to secure future Norwegian supply contracts. 

KONGSBERG has built a modern composite factory and invested large sums in advanced equipment. Production of composite parts for the Joint Strike Fighter will potentially last for decades. 

The Raufoss manufacturing cluster is a key industrial player – manufacturing parts for the automotive industry, defence industry and leisure market. The cluster is recognized for its professional expertise on light weight materials and automation. 

In a 30-year perspective this industry has a significant need for competent and motivated employees with a background in composites and plastic materials. These educations will from autumn 2016 also be offered as flexible distance education courses reachable from wherever in the country the student may live.

Colleges and companies united about the future

Collaboration between Tinius Olsen and Innlandet Technical Colleges will be boosted when they harmonise their curricula and open up for student exchange and coordinate teaching resources. There are plans for students to take part in distance learning from the classrooms, from the composites laboratory at Krona and the teaching lab at Gjøvik. This new education in composites and plastics will be a national investment, impacting positively on many Norwegian industrial communities. 

Future engineering students will be able to learn more about composites and plastics through new elective courses. The plan is that these courses also will be offered as continuing education for engineers in employment. There will be increased focus on composites and plastics at the university colleges in Kongsberg and Gjøvik. This will help industries under competitive pressure to modernise both design and manufacturing processes when new engineers are employed. There will be a continuous integration of all educational levels from
