KonMap taken over by Kongsberg Simrad

The world`s largest offshore supply ship, Viking Poseidon, relies on
both KonMap and Kongsberg Simrad systems during operations.

On 1 November 2001, Kongsberg Simrad took over KonMap Maritime Systems AS, known for its mapping and marine operation support systems.

In recent years KonMap has been partly a sub-supplier and partly a competitor of Kongsberg Simrad, but from now on the two companies will pool their resources and work together to create new and innovative solutions for our customers. KonMap employees have been transferred to Kongsberg Simrad as a result of the takeover.

As a result of the takeover, KonMap product rights and ongoing business have been taken over by Kongsberg Simrad and will be continued. Moreover, the product strategies of the two companies will be merged into one and hopefully result in new and interesting products and applications of benefit to our customers.

The history of KonMap The history of KonMap dates back to 1988 when the company was founded, but the roots go back even further to the Navigation Department of Kongsberg Vaapenfabrikk. Initially, KonMap delivered integrated navigation systems, and Kongsberg Simrad Dynamic Positioning Systems was one of the major users. KS used the KonMap navigation systems as the main source for positioning data.

When GPS (Global Positioning Systems) began to penetrate the market and become the main source for positioning data, KonMap shifted focus and started to develop and provide solutions for seabed data collection and processing. This was in addition to operation control systems intended to assist operators during difficult maritime operations. These new systems were sold to customers within surveying, dredging and offshore applications (essentially the same customers as those of KS), and often in combination with dynamic positioning systems.
